Howard Jones – Artist

Howard has painted, sketched and studied art since his childhood. His style is impressionistic with a leaning towards abstract. He now studies out of doors as much as possible in order to find inspiration for his studio work. Other than attending a number of external courses in traditional oil painting and monoprint at Cardiff Art College, Howard is mostly self taught.

Now giving most of his time to tutoring others in the mediums of watercolour and acrylic, Howard’s passion and dedication to helping those wishing to learn to paint for themselves is paramount. His promise to those with a genuine desire to learn is that he will pass on everything that he has personally learnt by straight forward easy to follow instruction and constructive advice.

With well over 2000 hours experience in live situation tutoring, Howard has developed a friendly and informative teaching approach that ensures all his students receive an enjoyable learning experience. As he says, “I know how daunting it can feel to someone starting out and more importantly, how easy it is to start off on the wrong foot as a result of being bombarded with so much free advice”.

His own artistic abilities have been and continue to be well endorsed by a wealth of successful exhibitions: 2018 saw an unprecedented interest in Howard’s work from a number of high profile galleries and clients in the UK, USA and Europe.

In October 2019 Howard was chosen as one of just four Welsh artists to represent his country at the Slager Gallery in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. This particular body of work was extremely well received and proved very successful for Howard.

As a child in the sixties, he was extremely fortunate to have seen many parts of Europe due to his parent’s nomadic excursions. These early life experiences of European towns and cities still influence his compositions by reappearing from memory like dusty old sketches. For much of his early work, landscapes became the main subject matter, for which he still has a penchant. However, Howard has never felt comfortable resting on his laurels and more recently we see a leaning towards producing work with a more allegorical content.

It is his total commitment to the exploration of new skills that furnishes Howard with the qualities required to teach others in the ways of these tricky mediums.  Howard takes and promises to always take the view that “another page must be turned”
