“I have been painting, drawing, and creating all my life.”
Growing up in the lower Wye Valley Jude recollects how much she thrived living in such a beautiful area. Indeed, the way she responds within her art was certainly shaped by her experiences growing up in this rural community.
“Attending the small local Primary school, I remember the joy it gave me to go on a nature walk and the excitement I felt for Friday afternoon painting. I seized any opportunity to participate in practical activities, making is for me just part of who I am.”
Surrounded by countryside, the content of her Art stems largely from growing up in this rural setting. A childhood, where she could roam freely within fields and woods local to home gave opportunity to observe the farm animals and wildlife that now so often form a central part to her paintings.

Jude studied general Art at Foundation level and Craft to degree level (BA combined studies wood, metal, ceramics, and textiles). Her Post Graduate specialism was teaching Art & Design and her broader awareness of the context of various art forms grew over almost thirty years of teaching. Fascination with form, colour, texture, and materials naturally developed through this period of study however painting as her own form of visual expression only truly developed following her teaching career.
Jude considers herself extremely fortunate to be able to focus now on the development of her own artistic expression and a return to that childhood love of painting has brought her full circle in her creative journey.
Whilst her paintings have developed from a wish to reflect the natural world that she spends much time cycling through, they are often so much more than a mere visual representation of the places and animals that she observes. She finds herself increasingly interested in how emotional connection to a place, person or animal can be communicated and as such there can be a deeper underlying meaning to much of her art. How do we represent the character of an animal or demonstrate the love, joy, or excitement we gain from our interactions with the world around us?
Jude paints primarily in watercolour or acrylics and works also with a variety of drawing media.
