Bronwen has been making felt for more than fifteen years.
She uses the almost-endlessly versatile wet-felting technique in 2D and 3D. This involves simply laying out carded wool, adding warm soapy water, rubbing, rolling and plenty of elbow grease (plus skill and trial-&-error!) to produce tough, stable, washable textiles of varying thickness. By adding a layer of fine woven silk fabric to the wool during the laying-out process, a thin more flexible fabric, known as ‘nuno’ felt, can be made which is suitable for scarves, for instance. Bronwen takes delight in blending colours, textures and shapes from the ‘raw’ materials, making a wide variety of items – vessels and functional containers, jewellery, scarves, bags, wall hangings and more. Also on occasion she makes coats, waistcoats and larger pieces. Her feltwork tends to be richly-coloured and multi-textured, using primarily merino wool with silks and many types of yarns and fabrics, and re-purposing scraps. Each piece is unique and one-off
